“We live only to discover beauty, all else is a form of waiting.”
– Kahlil Gibran
I paint a variety of subjects: landscape, cloudscape, figurative and floral. I work primarily in oils, though I do use watercolor from time to time, especially for preliminary studies of my subjects. I am endlessly inspired and captivated by the way light falls on an object as it is constantly moving and changing. I work in what is known as an ‘alla prima’ style, employing bold expressive strokes to capture the drawing and spirit of the subject in the first stages, then I’ll move to work with a smaller brush in the second stage to add and layer on more refined details. The third stage is varnishing, signing and framing the painting. Most important in this entire process, I believe, is to stay true to the very essence and soul of the piece; remembering that which inspired you – and therein lies the beauty, mystery and very alchemy of it all.
I currently am working in my home studio in Richmond, Virginia but also enjoy painting on occasion with my colleagues and community of artists at Chelsea Classical Studios in Chelsea, New York City.
